Database Performance Engineer
Database Perform SQL /Stored Procedure Specialist
Purpose
Ensure application workloads run efficiently on PostgreSQL by analyzing and optimizing stored procedures,queries,and data access patterns—especially those generated through DB2-toPostgreSQL conversion.This role bridges the gap between application engineering and database platform teams,taking ownership of query correctness and performance at the application
Primary Responsibilities
Application Query &Procedure Optimization
•Analyze execution plans and identify performance bottlenecks in SQL and stored procedures
•Refactor inefficient queries and procedural logic
•Optimize joins,indexing usage,and data access patterns
Migration Performance Validation
•Validate performance of converted stored procedures (e.g.,Ispirer-generated output)
•Compare behavior and performance against source system (DB2)where applicable
•Identify regressions introduced during conversion and drive remediation
Workload Analysis
•Profile high-impact application workflows (e.g.,heavy Scenariotable usage)
•Recommend improvements to reduce query latency and resource consumption
•Document findings and communicate optimization priorities to engineering stakeholders
Collaboration
•Partner with application engineers to align on correct and efficient query logic
•Work with database and platform teams on indexing,partitioning,and configuration tuning
•Coordinate with QA on performance testing,regression benchmarks,and validation criteria
Vendor &Tooling Review
•Assess quality of auto-generated SQL from tools such as Ispirer
•Provide concrete recommendations for improvement or manual rework where necessary
•Maintain awareness of tool-specific conversion patterns and known failure modes
Skills &Experience
•Strong SQL expertise —PostgreSQL required;DB2experience a significant plus
•Deep understanding of query optimization,execution plans,and cost-based planning
•Experience with stored procedures and database-driven application architectures
•Familiarity with performance profiling tools (e.g.,pg_stat_statements,EXPLAIN ANALYZE,auto_explain)
•Ability to interpret,evaluate,and improve auto-generated code
•Working knowledge of application development patterns and ORM behavior
•Comfortable operating in a fast-paced migration environment with ambiguous requirements
Success Measures
•Measurable reduction in query and stored procedure execution times
•Improved efficiency of high-impact application workflows
•Successful validation of migration performance benchmarks against DB2baselines
•Clear identification,documentation,and resolution of performance bottlenecks
•Reduction in escalations from engineering teams related to query performance
Scope &Boundaries
This role is focused on application-level database performance —queries,stored procedures,and data access patterns.It operates in close partnership with database and platform teams for infrastructure-level tuning,but does not own database operations such as backup,patching,HA configuration,or uptime
management.
